Celebrate William Allen White Legacy Day with a variety of activities during the weekend of Oct. 4-6, 2024. Honor Emporia’s most famous native son by attending one or several of the Legacy Day offerings.

Red Rocks State Historic Site, 927 Exchange St., will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, with free admission and tours for all. Red Rocks will host the William Allen White Children’s Book Awards Authors on the Porch event Friday, Oct. 4, at 5:00 p.m., featuring winning authors McCall Hoyle and Alan Gratz, who will sign books for children who participated in award voting.

Saturday, in addition to free tours of the William Allen White home, a historical interpreter will portray Sallie Lindsay White, wife of the famous writer and publisher, during a come and go reception at the site from 1 to 4 p.m. Granada Coffee Co.’s Red Rocks Blend coffee will also be featured, along with light refreshments. Reproduction campaign buttons commemorating the 100th anniversary of White’s run for governor opposing the Ku Klux Klan will be available, too.

On Sunday, enjoy a free screening of the film “Journey For Margaret” at the Emporia Granada Theatre, 807 Commercial St., at 2 p.m. Thanks to the Emporia Kiwanis Club and the William Allen White Community Partnership, Inc., there will be no admission charge for the movie based on White family true events, in which a war correspondent tries to adopt two children orphaned during the London Blitz of World War II.

The William Allen White Community Partnership, Inc. is the local organization that works in cooperation with the Kansas Historical Society to present Red Rocks State Historic Site, the legendary home of the White family. The Partnership helps fund annual operations of the historic site and, each year, presents a program series to interpret the White family story and associated history.
